The Participating Strains

There are two major crosses that are being utilised in the mapping effort. In addition, a third cross is in use here at Roslin to define linkages between molecular markers and traits of economic importance.

The Compton Cross

This is a cross between two inbred lines of White Leghorn (166k JPEG image) chickens. The two lines are known as Line 15I and Line N.

The East Lansing Cross

This is a cross between a highly inbred line of White Leghorn (166k JPEG image) and a partially inbred strain of Red Jungle Fowl (951k JPEG image).

The Roslin QTL Cross

Designed to allow the mapping of genes controlling production characteristics, this is a cross between an inbred line of White Leghorn (166k JPEG image) layers and a broiler strain known as the Ross Sire Line (103k JPEG image).
